Week 1 blog

  Part II of the text introduced to the highs and lows of the schooling system. We see school as being a burden to kids who fail, while kids who do well in school benefit greatly from attending. We saw schools serve as a residential complex for poor people on weekends. We even saw school have an influence on our troops in war. School is a privilege that we have that we sometimes take for granted. It is a blessing to be able to receive an education that sets us up for the rest of our life.  Early in Part II the text mentioned immigrants and their experience in the American school system. Writer Alfred Kazin and his parents immigrated to Brooklyn, New York. he said he hated school because he was not a very good student. He was terrible at math and described it as a terror. Spanish immigrants talked about how they would get a strong scolding and a swat, or spank from the teacher if they got caught speaking Spanish in class.   Here is a billion dollar question for you, literally a billion dollar question, should we healthy people be paying money out of our pockets that we worked hard for health care for obese people? I ask this question literally because the medical cost of adult obesity costs anywhere between $147 billion to $210 billion per year. What is even crazier than that staggering number? It is the fact that someone like Michael Phelps or Tom Brady accounts for paying that cost. Two world class athletes who are the picture of health pay out of pocket for the obesity population. Now, I am not saying those two men cannot afford it, I am just using them as a prime example of two men in peak shape and they contribute to paying for health care for obese people. How do we do this? By reading and writing. This idea is promoted by Thomas Jefferson through the text. America tried to unify its people with the implementation of the “Common School” system. This system allowed poor children to attend due to it being free of charge. It also lured private school students due to the school being free of charge. The main idea with public education unifying the country is that it provides a common foundation of knowledge.   The phrase our parents and grandparents love to grill us with, "these damn phones have ruined this generation!" So their answer to this question would be a very hard no. Even though I am a part of this generation and contribute to the population being possessed  by pop culture, I will be the first to admit that I do think pop culture is both good and bad for you. I would say it is about an even 50/50 slip. The good? An easy way to connect with your friends/family. From video games to TikTok, the possibilities are pretty much endless with how technological advance we are in today's day in age. Through video games, you can join parties online to be able to talk to your friends while playing the game together, you also do not even need to be playing the same game together, you can be playing two totally different games and still be able to talk in the live party.
